Malton began in the 1820s as a rural settlement at the crossroads of Derry Road and Airport Road, built up by Irish, Scottish, and English settlers and connected to the world by the Grand Trunk Railway.
Everything changed in 1937, when the flat farmland here was chosen as the site of a new municipal airport — the seed that grew into Toronto Pearson International Airport. During the Second World War, Malton became a centre of Allied aircraft manufacturing, producing Lancaster bombers and, later, two aircraft that would define Canadian aerospace: the CF-100 Canuck and the Avro Arrow.
That legacy lives on today at the Paul Coffey Park Flight Garden, where a restored CF-100 Canuck and a near full-size Avro Arrow replica stand as a gateway landmark for the community — and a tribute to the workers who built them.
The Malton Business Improvement Area was born out of a shared vision between local business leaders and city leadership: to build a thriving, beautiful, and prosperous commercial hub in Ward 5.
Following A Campaign Commitment By Ward 5 Councillor Bonnie Crombie, Three Town Halls And Multilingual Outreach To Over 325 Businesses Built Momentum For A Dedicated Business Zone. The City's Formal 60-Day Notice Period Closed With Zero Majority Objections. A Steering Committee, Chaired By Sam Kohli, Presented A Roadmap To Council — Entry Signage, Streetscape Upgrades, And A Digital Presence For Malton.
Mississauga City Council Voted Unanimously To Establish The Malton BIA, Defining Its Boundary Along Airport Road, Derry Road, And Goreway Drive.
“The Idea Of A BIA In Malton Has Been Around For Some Time, But It Took A
Dedicated Group Of Business People To Make It A Reality.” — Sam Kohli, Board Chair
At The Malton Community Centre, Members Elected The BIA's First Official Board Of Directors, Finalized Its Constitution And 2013 Budget, And Set Its Mandate In Motion: Revitalizing Malton's Business District Through Beautification, Streetscape Investment, And Marketing That Draws Visitors From Across The GTA.
From promoting local businesses and organizing events to advocating for improvements and community investments, the Malton BIA works every day to support the businesses that help shape our neighbourhood.
By bringing businesses, residents, and partners together, we’re helping create a stronger, more vibrant Malton for everyone.
